A Two-Minute Book Review

Dark Roads by Chevy Stevens

Recently orphaned, 17-year-old Hailey moves in with her aunt and controlling uncle. When another young woman turns up dead, she takes it upon herself to find the killer.

The story is inspired by the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Northern British Columbia along “The Highway of Tears,” where many cases remained unsolved. Given this, I was expecting a murder mystery/thriller. Instead, I noticed Hailey had survivalist and athletic expertise rivaling Katniss Everdeen, and there’s a stray dog who can stay seated on a moving dirt bike. Though part of the narrative is from a 27-year-old’s perspective, the angst, risky decisions, and big drama give the book a YA vibe. That being said, I enjoyed it! The pacing was fast, and I enjoyed getting to know the characters.

I read this as an audiobook purchased from Audible.

💬 Do you get fall colors where you live? We don’t get many here in Louisiana, but luckily I killed this poor…juniper(?), so I had a cool background. Silver lining!
